What kind of possessions shows the status in your country?
Many believe what they own dictates who they are, therefore, many properties are considered high-ranking and used to express one’s social class, such as a luxurious car, a villa, and cutting-edge electronic devices.
Do you think it was different for your grandparents?
In general, no. people, in the past, shared some idea with modern citizens that pricey and fancy items show one’s status. [Crack IELTS with Rob] However, the concept of what is pricey has changed from being land ownership to possession of hi-tech devices.
Modern society is often called “materialistic”, why do you think this is?
I hold that the modern society in my country is becoming more and more materialistic. The youth/ youngsters nowadays have plenty of ambitions related to money, and they can do whatever it takes to achieve their goals without concerning about ethics.
Do you think consumerism is a positive or a negative development?
Although it may bring about some benefits to society, such as boosting production and raising living conditions, it is still more a curse than a blessing. [Crack IELTS with Rob] Consumerism exerts a huge impact on environment, as it is the ultimate cause of climate change and resources depletion/ exhaustion.
